East Kent Goldings is a traditional English hop that can be used across all hop additions throughout the brewing process — from bittering in the kettle to late copper-hopping and dry hop additions.

Bred from a wild Canterbury variety in the late 1700s and brought to market in 1790, East Kent Goldings is recognised as having the most quintessentially English aroma of any hop variety. Its smooth, delicate, and slightly spicy character makes it ideal for traditional ales and bitters, as well as late hopping lagers where a refined, subtle aroma is desired. Product of UK.

Hop Profile

  • Alpha Acid (AA): 4–6.5%
  • Purpose: Dual (Bittering & Aroma)
  • Aroma: Lavender, honey, lemon, thyme, orange, grapefruit, floral
  • Beer Styles: English Ale, ESB, Belgian Ale, Traditional Bitter, Lager

Substitutions

If East Kent Goldings is unavailable, these hops share similar delicate floral and earthy characteristics:

  • Fuggles — earthy, woody, and herbal with a gentle bitterness
  • Willamette — floral, herbal, and earthy with a soft bitterness
  • Styrian Goldings (Celeia) — delicate floral and spicy notes, a close European equivalent
